My love of music and going to gigs eventually made me pick up a camera. Hanging around with New Model Army, I started getting to grips with an old Kodak 35mm camera that my Dad had given me. The Kodak was a totally manual camera where you had to take a reading with the light meter depending on what ISO film speed you were using, and even set the distance between you and the subject on the fixed 35mm semi-wide-angle lens!
I had to get my head around using the camera pretty quickly to get results! My early pictures were used by New Model Army on their ‘Stupid Questions’ 12” gatefold single sleeve. These were my first published shots which kickstarted the beginning of my career…
During the early years, I worked mainly in editorial (RAW magazine for 6 years and Kerrang magazine for 11 years). I eventually left editorial, searching to shoot for a broader client base.
Over the years, I built strong relationships with artists such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers (15 years) and Foo Fighters (20 years). The bulk of pictures you see in both band portfolios are shot on 35mm film, the days before digital.
More recently, I’ve shot for The 1975 (4 years) providing many pictures for all the bands online social media content.
Throughout my career, my work has appeared in publications all over the world including Rolling Stone, Q magazine, The Sunday Times and Spin to name a few.
I’ve also produced a number of single and album covers with inlay content for record companies and artists including posters, t-shirts, tour programs and archive content for artists such as Robbie Williams, Gorillaz, Blur, Bush and Jimmy Eat World.
A personal career highlight (although I’ve had many!) is having a book published worldwide documenting my time with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, plus a great number of my pictures used in the bands official book.
Aside from the music industry, I’ve also been lucky enough to work for the club I support and love, Liverpool FC. Whilst shooting their weekly magazine covers and match day program content, I’ve also taken player portraits for major book covers and projects such as “Liverpool Heroes” and “Liverpool Captains”.
I’ve also shot many official biography book covers for players including Sergio Aguero, Jimmy White, Fabrice Muamba, Lawrie McMenemy and Steven Gerrard.
Over recent years, I’ve branched into film and have produced video content for Twin Atlantic, Primus, Jimmy Eat World and Paradise Lost.
